Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District operates the South Shore Line—an electronically powered interurban commuter rail line—between Millennium Station in downtown Chicago and South Bend International Airport in South Bend, Indiana which includes the Miller Station in Gary. The line was built in 1901–1908 by predecessors of the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad, which continues to operate freight service. Passenger operation was assumed by the NICTD in 1989.
NICTD looks forward to working with the City of Gary on this very important project, creating the ground work for realigning the South Shore tracks through Miller. This work will enable the South Shore to help unlock the true potential of this section of Gary.
