Vita Nuova’s new Project Spotlight series showcases inspiring stories of redevelopment and community revitalization. In this first edition, we feature the transformation of the former Pillsbury Mills site in Springfield, Illinois.
Once a vibrant symbol of pride, this sprawling 18-acre complex with 26 buildings and 190 grain storage silos served as a bustling food processing plant and a major employer. However, neglect and its subsequent sale to scrappers led to its deterioration into a hazardous eyesore for the community.
Leading the revitalization efforts is Moving Pillsbury Forward (MPF), a not-for-profit organization. With support from the U.S. EPA’s Technical Assistance Program and collaboration with Vita Nuova and GDIT, MPF has overcome significant challenges and is creating a brighter future for the site.
